A very good question. Perhaps, if I may be so bold, I could “muddy the waters” yet further?
What is this?
This is a collection of physics cartoons that I have churned out over the course of my career in academe, as well as a pile of other etchings that I’ve been churning out more recently. In the short term I’m going to let the physics stuff update weekly and wedge the other stuff in as a haphazard extra.
I’ve been drawing this stuff for myself and friends and newsletters since the early 1990’s. Some of this work has been appearing in Physics World since 2002-ish or moreover failed to appear as they may be some of the unused roughs. A number of these only work in context with the article they accompanied. A few of these are for a tiny comic book I one day hope to finish entitled “All the Schrodinger’s cat jokes ever (for a given value of ever)” in the hope that that will be the end of it as i’m sick to death of reading the same Schrodinger joke repeated over and over again.
The steampunk stuff is primarily for Jamie Smart’s comic anthology Fat Chunk a well as The Steampunk Magazine, but as with many things I have both schemes and plans
Why is this?
1) A love of physics.
2) A necessary response to the process of actually doing science
3) A simmering rage at the dire lack of actual humour in most science cartoons. Barring of course xkcd which is a thing of charm and beauty and rotating frames of reference.
4) After Dr (then Mr) Skipsey suggested the name for this website I really had no choice but to go ahead with this nonsense.
How is this?
Tea, some spare time, the advice of some people who know more about web things than I, and the awesome power of a fully armed and operational wordpress installation. If any part of this site is broken please do drop me a message.
Who are you?
A drain on the world’s tea reserves? some kind of cartoonist/academic? a menace to Bessel functions? I definitely recall spending the past three and a half years researching textiles and colour at the University of Leeds, whilst at the same time self-publishing my own comic, a work of a slightly dubious content called fetishman. Prior to that were a number of years spent at King’s College London and then the universities of Essex and York whereby I became a bit qualified and then, eventually, even more qualified.
Is it secret! Is it safe?
If you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to post in the comments or try and track me down on the livejournal account that i use for general gibberish, or even myspace if it isn’t currently being hacked by some kind of ring-tone retailing monopoly.
Is there anything i can do for you?
How kind of you to ask! If the mood takes you i would highly recommend you buy the comics: random market sampling would seem to imply a marmite-wise trend, whereby you either love them or run away from them wracked with terror, and you do so love to live life on the edge don’t you? And if someone else would care to moderate I will happily introduce a forum to this place.
Will there be cake?
While there is science to be done there will always be cake.
regards,
geof
